Major Ravi Mamman (Mammootty) arrests two LTTE terrorists in Bangalore, who are on a mission to assassinate the Indian prime minister on his visit to the city. On the run, he identifies the government minister K.K.Nair (Janardanan) as the main conspirator behind the assassination plot. Nair anticipates a political coup after the death of the prime minister, through which he hopes to seize power. However, Mamman's attempts foil his ambition. Nair tries to buy out Mamman, who refuses his offers. In an attempt to save himself, Nair shoots Ravi Mamman, but the bullet accidentally hits Susan, Mamman's girlfriend, who dies on the spot. Nair fabricates a criminal case against Ravi Mamman, of killing Susan. Ravi is court-marshalled and sent to jail. Upon release, Ravi leaves to Dubai, where he emerges as a successful businessman in a short time. His business empire is spread all over the Middle-East. He is assisted by Chandran Nair (N. F. Varghese), an over-enthusiastic NRI. Ravi's sudden acquisition of power and influence makes him an enemy of many who are eagerly waiting for a chance to finish him off. Swaminathan (Nedumudi Venu), an accountant and a fatherlike figure for Ravi, is in deep financial trouble. He wins a lawsuit and gains several million Dirhams, but Victor Sebastian (Cochin Haneefa), his cunning attorney, cheats him by conspiring with Kishan Narayan Bhatta (Nirmal Pandey), an underworld don from Mumbai. Victor kills Swaminathan and his wife (Urmila Unni), after forcefully transferring properties to his name. Ammu (Anjala Zaveri), Swaminathan's daughter reaches Dubai from Bangalore for the funeral. Ravi Mamman promises her that he will recover her property. Kishan Narayan Bhatta tries many ways to resist Ravi Mamman. Lieutenant Kiran Pothan Cheriyan (Biju Menon), once a subordinate of Ravi in the Army, is in love with Alice, the sister of Ravi. Ravi Mamman, while coming to know about this relationship, decides to make Kiran a responsible guy and hands over the reins of business to him. Chandran Nair, who was holding huge power over Ravi, finds Kiran to be his enemy and joins Bhatta. In the absence of Ravi, he plots the murder of Kiran and Ammu. However they are saved by an Arab servant. Ravi Mamman realises the role of Chandran Nair behind the plot. Bhatta asks Ravi to visit him in his resort to agree a final settlement, where he discovers K.K.Nair to be the brains behind Bhatta. K.K.Nair is killed in Delhi at his guest house by Ravi, who flies back to Dubai to face Bhatta. Ravi succeeds in saving Ammu with the help of Kiran, and during the ensuing struggle, Victor and Chandran Nair are killed. Meledathu Raghavan Nair is the only support of a big family that includes his mother, wife Malathi, brother Vijayakumaran Nair, sister Sudha, uncle Kunjammama and his daughter Nalini. After Raghavan Nair s father s death the whole responsibility of the family came upon Raghavan Nair. His father had left with them huge amount of debts which then reached a stage of attachment from court. At that critical juncture it was Nair s uncle Kunjammama who helped them repay the debts by selling his property out of love for Nair s father and his family. Nair s brother Vijayakumaran Nair is studying for LLB. Raghavan Nair has pinged his entire hope on his brother Vijayakumaran Nair and wants to see him as a lawyer. After Vijayakumaran Nair became a lawyer he gets a marriage proposal of a senior advocate s (under whom he practises) daughter. The marriage takes place contrary to the understanding that it is Nalini (daughter of Kunjammama) who is to marry him. However, before the marriage, regarding this matter there was a small clash between him and his brother Raghavan Nair. Since Raghavan Nair felt that he was not being loyal to Kunjammama s daughter Nalini who were to marry Vijayakumaran Nair, he arranges a marriage for her before his brother s marriage. After the marriage Vijayakumaran Nair s wife Sobha tries to dominate the house in each and every matter. There occurs small clashes between her and the family members. Later a marriage proposal for the brother s only sister Sudha arrives for which the bridegroom s family demand large amount of money and gold. In order to meet this Raghavan Nair had to ask the help of his brother who in turn turns for the same to his wife Sobha. Sobha says that she will give the money on the condition that it will be returned and in the family she will be respected. One day when the family sit together for meal Raghavan Nair comes in between straight from the fields to dine with them. This irritates Sobha and she tells that it is unhygienic and she cannot stand the bad odour emanating from the mud-filled Nair. This in turn infuriates Sudha who sees her elder brother insulted. Sobha who takes Sudha s stand in the situation as threatening tries to evade from her earlier stand to give money for Nalini s marriage. However she is ready to help them if only the entire family is ready to bow before her. This Raghavan Nair sees as an insult to the entire family. He then decides to make the entire money by himself. In order to do so he pawns his share of the family wealth and finds money for the marriage. Meanwhile, another egoistic encounter of Sobha with Kunjammama forces him to leave the family. When Raghavan Nair also felt that his stay with his brother would only destroy the entire family, he also leaves the family to a new place, find some land and starts farming. After his brother left Vijayakumaran who is now alienated in the home feels estranged completely. He then meets his father in law (the advocate) who tells him that it was his mistake that he could not control his wife which led to all this. Vijayakumaran Nair then confronts his wife reasons her and slaps her. He then goes to his brother who now stays in a new place and asks him to come back. But Raghavan Nair rejects his brothers request with love and tells him that he is always with him and will come back to home whenever he feels like he should meet his brother. The movie ends with Raghavan Nair cherishing his love for his brother. more»

Malathi after losing her parents lives with her aunt who tortures and treats her like a servant. One day she is dumped in a waste materials godown and she falls sick. Doctor Vijayan(K. V. Srinivasan) who comes to treat her sympathises and admits her in a private school-cum-hostel for orphans. Malathi grows up into a young lady(Kanchana) and becomes a teacher in the same school. Baskar(Gemini Ganesan), a rich estate owner, lives in Shanthi Nilayam with his older brother Sekar's children(four daughters and a son) and is finding it difficult to bring them up as they are highly naughty and the hired governess runs away every time. His cousin Ramu(Nagesh) and his mother(Pandari Bai) live in the estate too. Baskar conveys his need to Dr. Vijayan who convinces Malathi to accept the governess job. Initially, the children don not accept Malathi but her understanding and matured nature soon wins them over. Baskar appreciates her work. Strange things happen in the house: Pappamma, the servant maid laughs and walks in the midnight with a candle, Balu(K. Balaji) visits Baskar regularly for money. Malathi suspects something wrong in the house. She comes to know that one of the children Geetha(Rama Prabha), an innocent loves Ramu. One night Baskar's coat catches fire and Malathi douses it. She demands to know why Baskar looks like he has lost something but he does not reply. Balu comes again and Baskar gives him money and tells him that he will not give him anymore. Baskar's family friend, Parvatham(M. S. Sundari Bai) arrives with her husband and daughter Sheela(Vijayalalitha). Parvatham suggests the marriage of Baskar and Sheela and Malathi is upset hearing this. Malathi's aunt with her daughters Saradha and Sumathi arrives there after having fallen in their life. Ramu's mother accepts them and they stay with Malathi. Sheela and her mother treat Malathi and her relatives badly. They spread rumours about Malathi, and Baskar shouts at Malathi to behave properly like an educated person. Malathi feels that even Baskar is treating her like a servant and decides to leave the house. However, Ramu stops her and states the Children's needs and she stays back. Baskar understands Malathi's commitment to the family and expresses his love for her. Sheela overhears this and shouts at Malathi for snatching away Baskar. Baskar asks Sheela and her family to leave. The children are happy about Malathi and Baskar uniting. Baskar fixing their marriage the next Friday. One day, Malathi sees Balu with bloodstains and demands an explanation from Baskar who promises to reveal everything soon. During the marriage proceeding Balu arrives and states that Baskar has already married his sister. Baskar accepts and reveals that he indeed married Janaki, a mad woman and explains the circumstances of the marriage. Baskar's father(V. S. Raghavan) in an altercation hit Singaram(Senthamarai), Balu's father leading to his death. Balu blackmails Baskar's father to marry his sister to Bhaskar and give a part of the wealth to her. Baskar's father refuses but Baskar, to save the family's prestige agrees and marries Janaki but finds her totally mad. He gives her the best medical treatment but there is no improvement in Janaki. Pappamma takes care of her. Baskar's brother Sekar was killed in a fire lit by Janaki. Ramu's mother confirms thae facts and Malathi is shocked and leaves home. The children cry for her to stay and Kavitha, one of them, follows her. Kavitha falls down unconscious and Malathi stops and returns home along with Dr. Vijayan, who arrives there. Meanwhile, Balu demands Baskar to transfer the wealth belonging to Janaki to him and threatens to kill him otherwise. Baskar takes on him beats him. At the same time, Janaki comes out of her room and puts the house on fire. Balu. Janaki and Pappamma die in the fire. Malathi, Ramu and Dr. Vijayan arrive and save everybody.
