Ballettan is the story of Athaniparampil Balachandran (Mohanlal) who is known for his service in the society. His father (Nedumudi Venu) is a retired postmaster. He lives with his wife Radhika (Devayani) and two children. Circumstances turn him into a debtor and he is arrested in a cheating case, but he manages to solve all those problems with his father's pension money. One day a stranger (Riyaz khan) comes to meet Balachandran. He introduces himself as Bhadran and asks his help for marrying his sister. Balachandran gets angry and this leads to violence in the house. His father asks him to leave the house. On the next day, while travelling in a bus, his father has a heart attack and is admitted to hospital. Later he calls Balachandran and reveals that he has another family. Balachandran, on hearing this shocking fact, stands shock stricken, unable to accept his father's words while his father suffers another heart attack which leads to his death. On his death bed he asks Balachandran to take care of his second family and also requests that his mother should never come to know about this. Its a fun masala romp with generous helpings of the recommended masala allowance. There is fiesty Hirni (Zarina Wahab) who wears backless cholis and sells liquor while her smoking hot boy-friend Jaamlia (Vinod Khanna) languishes in prison. Then there is the college-going Rekha (a very subdued Neetu Singh) whose attachment to Hamlet is exemplary -- she goes to bed with it! Her hair goes from shoulder length to waist length in the space of a few moments. Perhaps that is why a visiting drunkard -- Anand (Shashi Kapoor) -- falls for her and stalks her in a bordering-on-harassment song sequence. Mahendranath (Bharat Bhushan) is a rich and lonely old man with a smarmy new manager Dilip Singh (Prem Chopra). Mahendranath had a much younger brother Rajen (the annoying kid from Fakira) - a wilful brat who left home one day, never to be heard of again. Instead of heaving a sigh of "good riddance", Mahendranath keeps hoping Rajen will return. Taking advantage of the old man's hopes, Dilip hires an unemployed youth (Raza Murad), to impersonate the lost-and-now-grown-up Rajen. Mahendranath happily hands over all his property to "Rajen" and is promptly murdered by Prem. "Rajen" himself is bumped off later.Things get more complicated with new twists and thrills at every turn. Someone is sending Dilip threatening letters about Mahendranath's murder. Jaamlia is fighting off goons who land like flies in Shaitan Chowki to evict the residents. Anand makes a pact with Dilip to get Shaitan Chowki vacated. But is he tricking the residents or Dilip? Badshah Babar arrives in India from Iran, drives out Ibrahim Lodhi, makes peace with the Hindus and rules Delhi. He also adopts Rajkumari as his daughter and treats like his very own child, even though he has two sons, Humayun and Kamran, and a daughter, Gulbadan. Babar also finds out that Rajkumari is soon to be married to Randhir, the Rajkumar of Chanderi, who is out to avenge the conquest of his native land, by killing Humayun. Before that could happen Humayun falls seriously ill, Babar prays for his survival, but himself becomes ill and passes away, leaving Humayun to recuperate and be crowned the next Badshah. Humayun meets Hamida Bano and both fall in love with each other so much so that he loses all interest in the running of the state. When Delhi is attacked by Jai Singh, Kamran and Khan Bahadur join in the attack, forcing Hamida to flee. Pandiya is a young man who leads a troubled life. He is continuously being chased by Marudhu (a look-alike of him) and Marudhu's boss Kabali, who would be given a lot of money if they killed Pandiya. While being chased by them once, he gets into a runaway car being driven by an insane young girl (Vasanthi). The car crashes, but the girl is cured from her insanity. Her father allows Pandiya, who is homeless, to stay with them. Parallelly, Pandiya falls for Geetha and her father Amritha Lingam accepts the romance. But Marudhu and Kabali's pursuit for Pandiya still continues, and they successfully toss him into the sea. However Pandiya's elder brother Shankar, a scientist finds out about everything and agrees to help. He pretends to be Pandiya after faking his own death and confronts Marudhu and Kabali, making them shocked to see "Pandiya" alive. Just then, the real Pandiya steps in, revealing that two fisherman saved him from drowning and hell breaks loose.
