The film is set against the backdrop of the first communist Ministry of Kerala on the eve of its dismissal in 1959 after less than two years in power. A school going teenage, Jayan, grows warm relation with Bhasi, the tailor, who is a staunch Communist Party activist. Jayan's father is a strong sympathizer of Congress party. Jayan with knowledge dawning upon him realize how Bhasi and his near and dear ones live on the verge of fear of being annihilated by the henchmen of Congress and upper castes who seem to usurp power by unsure means and violence. Solomon Joseph (Prithviraj) is a police sub-inspector corrupt to the core. He has learned the importance of money and power and using his power he earns had loads of money. And spends on wine and women.He is the S.I. of Rajakad police station where two underworld kings, Ummachan (Devan) and Vavachan (Vijayaraghavan), clashes frequently. Solomon is friendly with Vavachan and helps him many ways, including helping move the vans with narcotics. He happens to lock horns with the younger brother of Ummachan who is an arrogant and spoiled brat. Blinded the power of his brother's money and political power, Dennis asks Solomon to apologize in front of his friends, who might hold him low respect since he was badly treated by the precinct Sub Inspector. Denis and his friends get beaten to pulp by Solomon who throws them into the jail afterwards.Ummachan manages to release his brothers and friends, but during the process he threatens Solomon. Next day, when he gets info that Dennis and friends are being entertained by a local (prostitute), he catches them red handed, with the intention of humbling Ummachan as well as getting as much money as possible from him.Ummachan is the next candidate for the Legislative Assembly and such an incident would mar his political future, so he humbly asks Solomon's services. But Solomon would not budge unless he is bribed 'properly'. Since the stakes are high, he claims to receive a significant amount for his service. Ummachan tries to get Solomon caught by anti-corruption personnel, but fails and finds himself behind the bars for attempted bribery to a police official. Blinded by murderous rage, Dennis try to murder Solomon with his four friends. Solomon beats up all the five and takes Denis to police station. The beating continues and hours of beating up takes its toll and Dennis dies. Haji made all his fortune by cheating his wealthy mentor Valiyaveetil Baputi. Baputi's wife and his daughter Nadia is facing eviction from their home because of Baputi's debts. Haji refuses to help them. Haji's son tries to molest Nadia and she files a complaint with new SI. Solomon tries to catch his fish from the muddy waters and arranges a drama which causes the death of Nadia's mother. This was unexpected and for the first time in his life, Solomon's conscience is dented. A couple of days after Haji's son tries to rape Nadia and Solomon saves her.In the meanwhile the constable who assisted Solomon to bury Denis' body turns up at Bathiyadukka and begs Solomon to give him money for his daughter's marriage. Madhavan (Mammootty), a simple village man who in childhood got bitten by the film bug, threw up his studies and finally ends up as 'Operator' Madhavan, who tours the countryside with his 16 mm projector and shows films at temple festivals and other public functions. Madhavan comes across a six-year-old boy (Yash) who is displaced from his native Gujarat and separated from his family after the devastating earthquake. This boy was taken into a gang of beggars from where he manages to escape. Madhavan takes the boy home and cares for him, just like a son. He and his Family takes a fondness for the boy, later finding out that legally he cannot adopt the boy. The boy is taken away from Madhavan to a juvenile home and allegations of ill treatment is charged on Madhavan, but soon dismissed. The issue gets media coverage. Madhavan then goes to Gujarat with the boy in hopes of finding his family or adopting him. At the disaster camp in Gujarat Madhavan understands that the boys relatives are all most probably dead but due to legal hurdles, the boy must stay on in the hope that his real parents might be traced. The youngest brother Chandrakumar is in love with his to-be engaged fianc e, Asha, his cousin. Their relationship is oppressed by the family members because of a small feud between them. But otherwise, the household is a happy, peaceful and satisfied one until the arrival of their new neighbor- an irresistibly charming and beautiful South Indian heroine- Yamuna Rani. This turns the household upside down and sends the ladies into a frenzy. The ladies in order to please the superstar, glamourizes themselves, their husbands and the house. Thus, they form a formidable friendship with Yamuna Rani. Soon, trouble starts to brew when the loan with which they bought their new household items in order to impress Yamuna Rani needs to be paid back to the moneylender. The trouble further escalates when the ladies, each, receive a letter from an anonymous identity, which claims that one of the three men are having an extramarital affair with Yamuna Rani. With the arrival of the letter, which devastates the ladies, chaos ensues. The husbands are severely under pressure from their respective wives, who are trying to find out who that one person is. The distraught wives go to Yamuna Rani and plead, which leads her to attempt suicide. Thus the husbands are taken into custody by the local police on account of traumatizing Yamuna Rani. Later it is revealed that it was the Munshi, who sent the letter to the ladies to end their modus operandi. Yamuna Rani recovers later and testifies that it was not because of the husbands, but due to her own mother who was pressurizing her of act inappropriately in a certain movie, that led her to attempt suicide.
